Burnout Behind the Success: Therapy for Professionals and Parents

A gentle guide for those who feel exhausted but keep going anyway

What Is Burnout — and Why It’s Often Hidden

Burnout isn’t just tiredness. It’s a deep emotional and physical depletion that builds over time, often masked by competence, care, or ambition. You might be:

• A professional juggling deadlines, meetings, and expectations

• A parent managing emotional labour, school schedules, and invisible tasks

• A caregiver or leader who’s always “on,” even when you’re running on empty

Burnout often shows up as:

• Emotional numbness or irritability

• Trouble sleeping or switching off

• Feeling disconnected from joy, purpose, or relationships

• A sense of “I can’t stop, but I can’t keep going either”

Why Burnout Is Rising

Recent surveys show burnout is increasing across the UK, especially in high-pressure roles and caregiving environments. Contributing factors include:

• Workplace intensity and lack of boundaries

• Parenting stress and emotional overload

• Social comparison and perfectionism

• Unprocessed grief, loss, or relational strain

Burnout doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’ve been strong for too long without enough support.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a space to:

• Explore the roots of burnout with compassion

• Reconnect with your needs, values, and emotional safety

• Practice nervous system regulation and boundary-setting

• Rebuild energy, clarity, and connection, gently and sustainably

I offer therapy online, by phone, or through walk-and-talk sessions in Manchester. Each format is designed to meet you where you are.

Gentle Signs It’s Time to Reach Out

• You feel emotionally flat or overwhelmed

• You’re constantly busy but rarely fulfilled

• You struggle to rest, even when you’re exhausted

• You feel like you’ve lost yourself in the roles you play

These are valid experiences. Therapy can help you come back to yourself.

Burnout in Young People and Students

Burnout isn’t limited to adults. Young people, especially students facing academic pressure or social stress, may feel chronically anxious, withdrawn, or emotionally exhausted. Therapy can support them in building resilience, boundaries, and emotional regulation.

Parents: If your child seems “fine” but is always tense, perfectionistic, or emotionally distant, gentle support may help them feel safe enough to open up.
